Location
On a day trip to surfing paradise on the Sunshine Coast, Noosa Qld Australia. Parking is difficult here most of the time, a very popular place at the end of the road at the edge of Noosa National Park. I think I was on the rocks somewhere between The Cove and The Witches Cauldron.Time
I'll have a go at capturing an image at any time of day or night. 2 in the afternoon isn't always the best time to find great images but today the clouds and light were on my side.Lighting
Lighting today is compliments of Mother Nature. Beautifully cloud diffused lighting with some interesting colour from the rains passing at the very back of the scene.Equipment
I'm totally in love with my Canon 7D Mark II, it comes with me everywhere. I've used my EF 16-35mm 2.8 L II USM with an experimental Haida ND filter, it says it a 10 stop filter but I would put it closer to 8. All of this is mounted on my trusty Manfrotto 190x.Inspiration
I love long exposures that make the clouds look like the are moving, and make rocks look like they are surrounded by mist. I don't often find myself somewhere where I can try to get both at once.Editing
This is an experimental image for me. I've applied some newly learned skills and created a composite, simply because the situation presented itself to me. The two image were created 7 minutes apart. The surfer came out on the rocks when I was finished framing the shot and locking down the tripod, but before I put the ND filter on. So a grabbed what looked interesting at the time. Using PS I've layered the two exposures together and painted the surfer into the long exposure. In my camera bag
I'm so happy you asked. I have a new addition to carry my gear about. I purchased via kickstarter the uber famous Peak Design Everyday Messenger months ago. Its been in my possession for about a month now and I don't have enough words to say how perfect this bag is. I have a Capture Pro clip on one end and a Capture Lens clip on the other. Inside I have my 7D ii, EF 16-35mm 2.8 IS II, EF 100mm 2.8 macro, Samyang 8mm fisheye. The Haida ND filter, a Spyder cube, a SpyderCheckr24, an air rocket, 4 spare batteries, spare memory cards and some lens cleaning stuff.Feedback
You need a tripod to do this, if you want to do it during daylight you also need an ND filter to hold back the light so you can keep your shutter open longer. Set your camera in bulb mode so you can keep you shutter open as long as you want. The camera settings for the long exposure part of this image was ISO 100 | f22 | 25sec. Do a number of exposures at different lengths so you have a few to choose from.
