Getting stuck in New York in 2010, on the way back from a family holiday in Florida, when the Icelandic volcano erupted and closed European airspace, proved a bit of a blessing in disguise as it allowed me a couple of days photography in the Big Apple - somewhere I'd wanted to go but never got round to.Time
After a trip to the top of the Empire State Building to take some shots, we were looking for somewhere to go for lunch when this fire engine came racing by.Lighting
It was a bit of a dull day in new York and the light was pretty flat.Equipment
A Canon EOS 40D couple with 18-200mm lens were used for this shot - my standard walkabout kit at the time. Hand held.Inspiration
I'm always on the lookout for a shot, particularly when traveling and visiting new cities - something that's iconic and could only be from that place. I was lucky that this fire engine came racing past and I had my camera ready at the time.Editing
The zoom burst effect was added in Photoshop to give the image a bit of punch. In my camera bag
A Canon DSLR of some description is always in the kit bag. When this was taken, it was the 40D. Now, it's the 7D. Various lenses, both Canon and Sigma.Feedback
Keep your camera out and ready to shoot when exploring new places - you never know what might be around the next corner.
