Throughout the summer months in the UK, there's an airshow on somewhere on most weekends, so there's plenty of opportunity for the aviation enthusiast to get some great shots. This particular shot was taken at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire.Time
Despite being the height of summer in the UK, sometimes it rains in July. Believe it or not, this was taken at about 2 in the afternoon.Lighting
Natural light. Being an outdoor subject and with the aircraft some distance away, you have to deal with the lighting in front of you as there's no option to use flash or studio lighting.Equipment
When this shot was taken my main camera was the Canon EOS 40D, paired with the Canon 100-400L IS USM lens, all hand held.Inspiration
Fast jets with afterburners lit make for great subjects. Couple that with dark, brooding skies and you get something dramatic.Editing

Like any form of photography, knowing your subject is key to getting great shots. Learning to pan also helps with action shots like this.
