During the Civil War the Confederate States of America (CSA) printed their own paper money. Confederate paper money was printed between 1861 and 1864. A general rule of thumb for today’s collectors is that the earlier currency issues are worth more than later issues. The confederate currency guide at http:--www.oldcurrencyvalues.com-Confederate_Money.html shows a picture and a link to more information about each issue.
The Confederate dollar, colloquially referred to as a greyback (only the front of the bill was printed), went into circulation in April of 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War. Early on, Confederate money was exchanged and accepted with confidence throughout the South as promissory bills of credit, but were not secured or backed by any assets. The notes were payable in full only upon the ratification of an anticipated peace treaty between the Union and the Confederacy after the war. But as the tides turned against the South as the Civil War progressed, the money's assumed value plummeted. Once the war ended and the Confederacy no longer existed, its currency became completely worthless.

In researching these bills I liked most the finding out that they only printed one side and that is why they where commonly refered to as greybacks.
