Location
This is Fountains Abbey just outside Ripon, North Yorkshire. Photography is a hobby and this is my favourite image.Time
This was taken on a morning in May not long after the site opened for the day to the public. I was extremely lucky to be able to get a shot without any members of the public walking across the grass or appearing in the doorways, apart from one.Lighting
To get the angle of the abbey I wanted with the sunlight showing only on the main part of the abbey and casting the trees behind in total shadow meant standing under a large tree which helped as it kept the sunlight off the camera.Equipment
This was shot with a canon 600d ISO 100, f22, 37mm with an 18-200mm canon zoom lensInspiration
I like taking images of any old or abandoned objects not just buildings. Fountains abbey is a huge building and while walking around it I could see the way the sunlight was falling on the building and the shadows it was creating. Taking a shot of the full width of the building did not produce the same effect I could see with only part of the building captured. This was due to having to stand more central to the building so by standing at one end of the building I could capture the full effect made by the sunlight, and, an added bonus of bringing the clouds into the image where a more central position did not.Editing
I had taken the shot with the intention of producing a black and white image. I basically just increased the colours and used a lot of sharpening and noise reduction to clean and get as clear an image as possible. In my camera bag
The camera, canon 600d. Lens, well since purchasing a canon 18-200m lens I have found this is suitable for any landscape or close up that I wish to take and saves swapping lenses while out and about, and I only take a bigger lens either a 70-300mm or 800mm mirror lens if I know i would be using them. If I am taking one of the bigger lenses I always use a tripod otherwise I take a monopod while out and about just in case. I also carry a spare battery, spare lens caps, cleaning wipes, cotton buds and, most importantly, the camera instruction manual.Feedback
Daylight conditions dictate the final image produced, do you want some clouds or no clouds, sun high or low or no sun and if going to a site open to the public then you have to factor in there will probably be people on site at the time of day you want to take the shot. If you have a certain shot in mind, plan well ahead keeping updated with weather forecasts and the sites busiest times and I would also advise patience, it may take several visits to a site open to the public to finally get the shot you want.
