A Pixel X800C flash, mounted on-shoe, balances the strong, strong backlighting from above. I chose this setup specifically to produce the sun-star peeking through the blossoms of this apple tree while still showing color in the foliage and sky. Note the exposure of 1-400 -- a flash capable of HSS is really helpful in cases like this.

Yes, that's right -- it's the statue from the opening credits of WKRP.

This magnolia macro is lit from behind with a speedlight, turning the flower petals into a softbox.

A strobe at close range (HSS) illuminates the flower, allowing me to underexpose the background, so I was able to shoot without cutting the flower.

Glass, still hot from the oven, is formed in a ladle before it's blown into shape. This work is every bit as hot as it looks.
