Behind The Lens

Location

Inniswood Metro Gardens is a hidden gem on the North side of Columbus, OH. A favorite among macro photographers and portrait photographers alike, there's a wonderful variety of flora to be found nearly year-round. This scenic little waterfall is part of a water feature near the center of the park. A wider composition would show walkways around these falls that are popular spots to pose portrait subjects.

Time

This shot was taken in late October (hence, the autumn colors), but crucially, the oblique angle of the late afternoon autumn sun meant that I could use a slow shutter speed without the aid of a Neutral Density Filter.

Lighting

Natural late-afternoon light allowed for a relatively slow shutter speed.

Equipment

Canon 7D, Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM @ 20mm, f/20, ISO 100. Manfrotto 190CxPro4 tripod.

Inspiration

This is naturally a beautiful area of the park, but I wanted to show a scene that wasn't obviously part of an urban garden, so composition was key. I found that I needed to position the camera quite low -- almost below the level of the walkway I was shooting from, and then I worked to show the movement of water from top-left to bottom-right as it moved across the scene.

Editing

Minimal processing was applied in Lightroom: custom WB, shadows, clarity and vibrance boosted.

In my camera bag

Canon 7D, Canon 15-85, Canon 100mm macro, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Canon 70-300, Pixel Mago speedlight, Yongnuo triggers, Manfrotto 190CxPro4.

Feedback

Since this is a long-exposure photo, stability is key. In this case, the unique ability of my Manfrotto tripod to support the camera very near to the ground was crucial to composing the shot just the way I envisioned it.
