Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my back garden in Bicester, Oxfordshire. I am always inspired by new life and new blooms in the garden after a long winter.

Time

This was taken mid morning. I was walking in the garden looking a the display of roses when I spotted this perfect specimen. I just had to reach for my camera and tripod.

Lighting

I wanted to enhance the beauty of the flower and so I used a mist spray to get the water droplets on the petals. This added interest to the picture and changed the lights by reflecting it on the undersode of the petals.

Equipment

Olympus SP500 UZ mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this photograph was walking in the garden on a spring morning. The colour and form of the roses in the garden were irresistible.

Editing

I used my standard post processing workflow tweaking the shadows and highlights to get the best result.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a compact camera on my belt all the time to capture that unexpected shot. When going out to shoot I carry very little in the way of accessories preferring to have my camera in hand and ready to shoot.

Feedback

Flowers in a garden are a fantastic subject to practice getting your shots right. They are attractive to photograph and the results can be stunning with very little effort. My advice would be to scan the flowerbeds regularly in order to spot the perfect bloom. Avoid harsh strong sunlight which can bleach out an image.Take as many shots as you like and the sit back and enjoy your garden indoors whilst working on your images.
