Location
This photo was taken in the front garden, from the path leading to the house. It was a photo I took as part of an assignment for the NZiPP Diploma.Time
Taken around mid-day on a cloudy wet day. It had been raining all morning and then there was a break in the weather. I love taking photos of water droplets on plants and saw this row of droplets hanging onto an Agapanthus flower stem.Lighting
Shot hand held using natural light, no reflectors or cards were used.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon 30D (8Mp) I owned at the time, with the Tamron 90mm Macro lens. Hand held, no tripod or flash. Taken sitting down so I could get a blurry green background in the vegetation. macro shots have a lovely shallow depth of field allowing you to isolate the subject fro the background.Inspiration
Getting out into the garden after a rainstorm is always great. I always look for interesting water formations on flowers and leaves.Editing
I think here I just boosted contrast a little and cropped the subject. In my camera bag
Canon 1Ds III for studio work. Canon 1D III for field work, along with a newly acquired Eos M3. The canon 30D is long gone. Selection of Canon L lenses and Sigma 50mm and 84mm f1.4 primes. Godox lithium powered flash. Manfrotto monopod.Feedback
Any camera is good enough, but I do recommend a good macro lens. The Tamron 90mm has a great reputation as has the Canon 100mm. Carry a small flash or ring flash if the subject need illumination, but I find these are better used on insect life. A small reflector with black and white sides to act as a light bounce, a shade, a background if you wish. Lightweight tripod and cable release, but in all honesty this was a hand held shot! The right angle is important, I had to sit down to compose the flower stem with the right background. So if chasing rain drops, have something waterproof to kneel or sit on
