Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my small home studio.

Time

Afternoon

Lighting

Lit by a beauty dish to the front and high above the camera as the key light, and a 90x60 soft box to the lower right of the picture for some infill to the veil.

Equipment

Canon Eos 1dS mkIII Canon Ef L 70-200 f2.8 2x 180w studio lights on Manfrotto poles 90cm beauty dish 90x60 soft box Wireless flash triggers Camera tethered via USB into Lightroom

Inspiration

It's an idea I have had for some time. Inspired by the old Nat Geographic cover of the Afghan girl with piercing green eyes, I wanted to capture an exotic version in the studio.

Editing

Processed in Adobe Lightroom, a medium curve contrast boost brought out the vivid purple of her veil.

In my camera bag

Depends on my trip and what I intend to shoot. For studio work its always the Canon 1dS mkIII body, with either 85mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4 or the 70-200 f2.8 2 to 4 flash heads

Feedback

I love playing with studio lighting. As a photographer you have full control of light, shadows and contrast. This was a relatively simple set-up. Standard beauty dish light directly to the front, positioned high about the camera pointing down into the face. The small sofbox was really just to throw some light onto the lips and veil. 1/200 at f4.5 Anyone can try a similar shot with just two lights.
