This photo of Electrae was taken in an old TV studio in Quebec City that I had exclusive use of for the better part of 2 years. It has a white infinity wall built in that was such a godsend as I did not have to bring anything other than lights, camera and tripod.Time
It was late morning, obviously indoors, I had asked the model to buy an Afro wig that I believed would work well with her striking features.Lighting
For the space I brought along 2 very inexpensive strobe units that I used at the time with a soft box, one positioned very close to and above the model to make sure there was minimal shadow and very soft on her face.Equipment
I always use my Canon EOS 6D with a 2nd hand Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L with no image stabilization. I tend to shoot hand held always and at around ISO 160-360 at around f8 and adjust my lighting accordinglyInspiration
Electrae is just the best model to work with as she is extremely versatile and can accept any sort of style. I wanted something soulful and close up and I knew I wanted the Afro wig to be a frame of sorts.Editing
I edit exclusively in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom - I wanted it to be a beauty shot so I went for a high end look for the skin and her eyes. It was not a minimal job as I wanted it to look like it was from a magazineIn my camera bag
Normally the 6D with the standard kit lens which is a great all rounder and I have to throw in the 70-200 whenever I am in the studioFeedback
No advice - I didn’t know this shot would be the favorite from that particular shoot but when I got home and reviewed the images, this one was by far the best of them all. I usually have most shots planned in my head before the shoot or on the day when I am in the space, but this one was only visualized when I went in for close ups.
