Location
This shot was taken in a downtown hotel in Montreal back in November 2011. The place had a small kitchenette that meant it had a long throw to the back wall, perfect for photographyTime
This was my last shoot before going back to Quebec City, some time around 10:30am. I made time to shoot Christelle as I had admired her work and was stoked that our schedules synchronized fortuitously as she is a very busy traveling modelLighting
I had 2 cheap strobes, on filled in the daylight at the front and the other was positioned to make the back wall featureless. It is a common setup that I use frequently when I am indoors. Nothing specialEquipment
This was shot on a Canon Rebel T1i paired with an EF-S 17-85mm which was all I could afford at the time as I was coming from a Canon 350D. Handheld I believe as it allows freedom to frame how I want. I always get low below the model’s eyelineInspiration
Christelle is a very experienced and expressive model and this is just 1 of a hundred great images. My inspiration is 99% what the model brings with their energy and personality.Editing
Always retouch an image myself for better or worse, went heavy on the sharpening of the hair to make a backdrop for her features. I start off in Photoshop and always put the finishing sheen in LightroomIn my camera bag
These days as well as whatever body I feel like (including a Canon Mirrorless) I always have the EF 70-200L f2.8 non IS, the 28-105L, a strobe and a couple of LED panels so I can do indoor and outdoor. A carbon fiber tripod and an iPad and Bluetooth speaker for music to shoot byFeedback
I almost never give advice beyond make up your own rules once you’ve learned any rules that allows you to achieve what you want.
