Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the dining room table in our home.

Time

It was taken in the early afternoon during winter when the sun was quite low in the northern hemisphere.

Lighting

There was very little natural light in the room. I had the overhead lights in the dining room on.

Equipment

The camera is a Nikon D7100 with a standard 18-140 lens. I did not use a flash, but I did increase the ISO significantly. The camera was steadied on the table.

Inspiration

I was trying to experiment with the notion of candlelight and took a number of photos in this series. I am delighted with the way this photo appears and with many of the others. It was really one of the first shots I took with a new camera and it was quite successful.

Editing

A month of two after taking the shot, I purchased Lightroom and Photoshop. There was some exposure modification using Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Besides the camera and lens, I also have a telephoto lens from an old Canon camera that doesn't work all that well with an adapter on the Nikon. I am looking to purchase a better Nikon telephoto lens in the future. I have also purchased a good Nikon SB-700 Speedlight. I also carry a battery charger and some lens cleaner with appropriate tissue.

Feedback

I think it's important to play around and really have fun with the camera using creative ideas. I am not looking so much for "professional" quality, as I am for teaching myself technique knowing that improvement will come if I am not hesitant to experiment with new ideas. I am reading all the time about photography, photographers, their equipment, and style and this is very inspiring. I am not yet a "studio" photographer and I don't really want to spend time in Photoshop at the expense of being in the field and taking photos. I want my photos to resemble real life and capture real images with as little adjustment as possible.
