Location
I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. Around Christmas time in 2013 we were hit with a big snow storm followed by a big rain storm followed by a deep freeze that knocked the power out in some places for close to two weeks. Many, many trees, power lines and fences were falling over due to the heavy weight of the ice and snow and there was a lot of damage all around us.Time
Because there was no power in our house my husband and I decided to go out for a drive armed with our cameras one morning. I was blown away by the stunning beauty of the clear blue skies and sparkling ice. I am always drawn to the rural areas, their peaceful farmland and breathtaking views so we headed out to see what we could find. We were not disappointed.Lighting
I didn't use any special lighting techniques. Lucky for me it was one of those beautiful bright sunny days with an abundance of natural light. I did use a higher shutter speed so the snow and sky didn't get overexposed.Equipment
For this photo I used a Canon 7D with my 10-20mm lens. My settings were: 1/1000s, f5.6, ISO 200 at 10mm.Inspiration
I just wanted to share the beauty I saw all around me. Everywhere I looked was a photograph waiting to happen. I love how this photo makes me feel like I'm standing right there next to the fence.Editing
I actually didn't have to do too much to this photo, a little sharpening and that's about it. Sometimes I add a vignette or some clouds if I feel the sky needs a bit of a pop. I took the "less is more" approach to this photo and I'm glad I did.In my camera bag
I carry as much as possible in my bag so I can be prepared for anything. These days I'm shooting with a Canon 5D Mark III body that I love and the 7D is my back-up body. More often than not my camera is equipped with my Canon 70-200mm 2.8 L series lens which is my favourite. I also have a Canon 24-105mm L series lens, and a Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro lens. For the 7D body I have a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens. I use a 430EX II Speedlite as my main flash and have a 420EX Speedlite for backup. I just got a set of ND filters that I can't wait to play with.Feedback
My biggest advice is - don't rush and always, always check the back of your camera to make sure you are getting the results you want. I don't know how many times I've taken a bunch of photos only to realize that my settings weren't correct. For this shot in particular I was using my wide angle lens with an f stop of 5.6 to give me a good amount of detail. Because it was so bright outside I had a shutter speed of 1/1000s. I stood beside the rail on the right and made sure I had enough of the tree in the frame on the right side and enough of the sky at the top to make a nice composition. Don't be afraid to try different heights and different angles. I am quite often on a chair, a ladder or laying on the ground to get a different perspective. Half the fun is experimenting and trying new things!
