Location
It was taken last year on a trip to the hill villages of North East TurkeyTime
It was taken about midday on the front step of the old ladies house. She is 85 years old and still lives on her own with help from her neighbours in thevillage.Lighting
Nearly all my environmental portraits are taken with natural lighting. I just made sure she was in shade to lessen thge contrast. The shot is not posed, she just wanted to show us he favourite duck!Equipment
I was using a Canon 5D Mk11 with a 24-105 lens. iIn this kind of situation you don't need to be changing lenses all the time or you may miss an opportunity. The 24-105 is great for this type of natural shooting.Inspiration
We had visited this lady 2 years before ( when we photographed her with a rabbit!) We were returning with a copy of that photograph to give her and she chatted away while we took some photos.Editing
I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 for post processing and I just adjusted the levels and curves and darkened the corners down a bit to hold your attention on the subject. Her sweater was a bit bright so I took out a bit of the colour, then sharpened her and the duck whilst leaving the background as it was.In my camera bag
A lot of these villages are reached on foot so I travel light. One camera body, 2 lenses (the 24-105 and a 17-40 for smaller spaces like inside the house) Apart from extra battery and cards, that's it!Feedback
Don't take too long trying to get your photo. These people are not models and you are just trying to capture their everyday life. Also, get the shot before worrying about camera settings. I start by shooting on program with the ISO adjusted for the light conditions then, if there is still time to take more shots I can try different apertures etc. The main thing is to get something in the bag as soon as the opportunity arises, and keep talking to your subject - even if you don't speak the language!
