Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at home while doing some practice shots; the goal was just to capture close-up detail in a rare moment my Husky was being cooperative.

Time

It was in the afternoon while I spit my time between the BBQ and shooting various things in the backyard.

Lighting

Natural lighting with about a 3PM sun.

Equipment

This was with my Sony a77 and, I believe, the Minolta 35-105mm macro lens. The lens was an ebay find and I was just playing around to see what it would do. Just handheld with no flash.

Inspiration

Most people tend to comment about Takoda's eye color, and getting a close-up shot really seemed to pop. My dogs are spoiled to offset how often they are used (sometimes willingly) as practice subjects for my photos.

Editing

In post, the main edit was cropping to highlight the eyes.

In my camera bag

In general, I carry a lot of extra batteries and a couple spare memory cards. Depending on the shoot, I may bring external flash units and one or two different lenses (like my trusty Minolta 1.7 50mm or giant Sigma 50-500mm) but 95% of my shots use the Sony 18-250mm or Sony FE 24-240mm. I do a lot of event shoots, and fast versatility is key while trying to remain as lightweight as possible.

Feedback

Get used to spending a lot of time in a prone position; a photographer with perfectly clean clothes is probably not trying hard enough to get an interesting shot!
