Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the balcony of my hotel in Kusadasi, Turkey in March 2014.

Time

It was taken at one of my favourite times of the day - sunset. The other is sunrise. Nature is unique, and both these times of the day produce some magical colours. At the end of any day, there's nothing better than relaxing with a refreshing, crisp wine, some cheese and watching the sunset. It makes my day complete. This particular evening the sun was in a perfect position and I copped heaps of flack from my friend while I arranged the wine, cheese and furniture to align with the setting sun to capture the moment. I knew I only had a small window.

Lighting

I didn't use anything additional to capture this moment, just varied the settings slightly in the hope one would be perfect as sunsets can also bleed your photos. Two of ten were ideal. I think I was lucky that night as for several days my camera had been playing up and I had very few good shots. I rarely alter my photos and certainly not massively - I'm too lazy, plus I think that it falsifies the truth - that's not me. I write travel and believe my photos also have to tell the true picture.

Equipment

At that time I had a Nikon D200 with an 18 to 200mm lens. I didn't have time to gather any other equipment that night otherwise I would have lost the sun. I do travel with a tripod, rarely a flash as I mostly photograph outdoors and no other lens as I'm small and I always consider weight as I travel a lot. I have a new Nikon now and a 16 to 300mm lens. It's perfect.

Inspiration

As I said before I love this time of the day, it's when I relax, and watching nature at its best is so soothing and peaceful to the soul. When the colours standout I go mad with my camera. I have so many sunsets and sunrises, even from my own balcony back in Australia, I'm sure people think I'm a crazy woman!

Editing

No. If I have to do that I'll give up photography! I really can't see the sense in spending hours on the computer having to manipulate nature's beauty.

In my camera bag

These days my Nikon, 16 to 300mm lens, 2 batteries, my MacBook Pro and iPhone 8 along with the necessary chargers and adapters for whichever country I'm in. These are always in my hand luggage when flying too. They are my life.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to experiment. It's all digital now so very easy to delete and try again. Vary settings and just play around with your equipment, even the processing if that's what you're in to. Do it without anyone else watching on until you are comfortable. The more you are attuned to your equipment the easier it is to capture that special moment and quickly.
