Behind The Lens

Location

I took a 4:56AM train into New York City before work because the forecast was calling for fog. A foggy Central Park -- it does not get better than that. Of course, when I got to the City, there was no fog to be seen. Still I got this great blue hour shot. Needless to say, I was late for work that day.

Time

At 6:00AM, Central Park is pretty empty. Yes, New York is the city that never sleeps but those who were awake were not in Central park on this chilly morning.

Lighting

It was my first time shooting with my new wide angle lens. The timing was perfect since I was able to include the moon in the frame. Loving the blue hour sky.

Equipment

Nikon D610 and a brand new 14-24mm f/2.8. Of course I forgot my tripod so I leaned the camera on the bridge to get this 20 second exposure.

Inspiration

Central Park is an oasis in one of the busiest cities in the world. I love the contrast between the water and trees against the skyscrapers.

Editing

Edits in Lightroom with the normal work flow (reduce highlights, opened up shadows, added a bit of clarity). Some clean in PS, but nothing major.

In my camera bag

I now have the holy trinity of Nikon lenses: 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200 all with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Unfortunately, they are pretty heavy to carry around together but I least my legs and back are getting stronger.

Feedback

Central Park is filled with amazing views. You need to go at the right time (early or late) and the right season (winter and fall are best). This photo was taken from Gapstow Bridge which has an amazing view. By the way, shooting the bridge itself yields some good images.
