Behind The Lens

Location

This image was created during the Cut Out event that is held at the Proston Country Show every year. The Proston Country Show is a one day event that has been held in the since 1958.

Time

They always hold this event very late in the day. Its in a yard off the main ring with lots of tall trees to obstruct the fading sunlight. Its a challenge every year I do it and never the same, this is probably what keeps me coming back to it.

Lighting

Oh yeah, so I already shared the lighting issues in the time of day. They kind of go together when dealing with natural light images.

Equipment

I used my new favourite Canon EOS 7D MKII with an 18-55mm kit lens. I recently gave my old Canon EOS 650D to my son, I had ordered him a new 18-55 but it didn't arrive before he flew back home to Canada. So, I gave him my old one complete with the UV filter in place. I forgot I didn't have anything over the lens of the new one. That lens was destroyed during this shoot. It was very dry and dusty and every run around the pen sprayed stacks if over me and the camera. I had an air rocket in my hand to blow the big chunks off the lens, it was full of dust at the end of this game as well.

Inspiration

I'm inspired by the difficult lighting and the dusty conditions at this location. Last year I shot over the top of the fence, I decided to go for a different angle this year and shoot the action from under the fence. I had my partner stand behind and watch so he could drag me out if it looked like anyone was going to slide under the fence. Make sure you have a spotter if you going to risk putting yourself into a potentially dangerous situation.

Editing

I only ever shoot in RAW, I don't normally give the camera supreme control over my images. I feel I do a better job at post processing and I like to practice to get better. This image was processed in ACR and then brought into photoshop for additional detail enhancement. There are a number to levels, saturation and brightness layers and masks applied to this image. I also put on an overlay to try and cover up/distract the viewer the power pole (probably shouldn't have done that).

In my camera bag

I don't go anywhere without my Canon EOS 7D MKII ( I think this body is almost as bomb proof at the 1Dx, I recently photographed a concert in the pouring rain and didn't have a single problem). I've upgraded my very dirty and crunchy 18-55 kit lens to the amazing Canon EF 16-35mm 2.8L (completed with a UV filter to make sure dust doesn't get inside it). I also always have my Canon EF 400mm 5.6 L prime, a Canon EF 100mm 2.8 macro prime and the odd one out but the very fun and all manual Samyang 8mm fisheye.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to change the camera angle. Just because all the other photographers are in one spot doesn't mean that is the only place to be! If you don't want the same shots they are getting, think different and look around you. If you want to stop the action in low light situations raise your ISO so you can increase your shutter speed.
