On an early morning walk to catch the golden hour in the Wonnangatta Valley in the beautiful Victorian High Country I was walking past the horse yards where the various trail riding outfits pen their horses, this very handsome guy came up for a chat, he was favouring his right leg so I am assuming that he lamed and they were leaving him there until the next group came through for him to recover. He obviously missed the company as he just followed me round for a while and loved a pat.

Behind The Lens

Location

Orse was taken in the Wonnangatta Valley in the Victorian High Country, googl there is a heap of info. The Valley is one of the places on earth that I am truly at peace. One of the truely iconic places to visit if you are ever in Victoria it has a history as a cattle station going back to the mid 1800's and was the scene of a still unsolved double murder maybe a love tryst gone wrong is one of the theories. The Valley now lays in one of the most beautiful National Parks we have and accessed only by 4 wheel drive and horses. This takes me to why old Neddy was in the Valley or more to the point why I believe he was there. I am assuming that he was one of the trail ride business horses that got a bit lame and needed a rest until they came back probably the next week, there are stock (or horse) yards with plenty of feed and water near the site of the old homestead and that is where he was as I jumped the fence to get a few shots he wandered over and followed me round, obviously used to company.

Time

Very early just after dawn so there was some nice light to work with.

Lighting

Not really other than it was early and the sun was just rising so nice filtered light through the trees taken at 15th second, iso 400 and f5.6 @ 190mm.

Equipment

Nikon D800e and hand held with my "walk around" a nikon 28-300VR

Inspiration

It was just a beautiful moment, old mate was just contented following me around and he just happened to stop in the right light.

Editing

Not much, just converted to B&W in Lightroom and maybe pushed the contrast up a little, dropped the highlights and opened up the shadows, there was no extreme light to deal with so it was pretty easy

In my camera bag

I am still a Nikon tragic and now use a D800e, what a wonderful piece of kit it is too. Lenses I carry are all Nikon with one exception so in my bag is my everyday 28-300, Nikons mind blowing 14-24 2.8, Nikon 80-200 2.8, Nikon 85 1.4 prime and the odd man out the brilliant Sigma 35 1.4 Art. Spare batteries and memory cards, cleaning kit, some filters a torch and pocket knife Flash is a Speedlight SB910 that I rarely use. I use a Manfrotto monopod for pretty well everything (age does that too you) and my newest acquisition to retire my old heavy Manfrotto Tripod is a light(ish) Carbon Vanguard Alta Pro 283 with a Vanguard ball head. One thing that I have found and absolutely love is the Wondapana filter kit for the 14-28, so far it seems like a fantastic solution to the huge bulge of all that Nikon glass on this lens with a Polariser wet bush, creeks and waterfalls are no problem anymore! I bought a Cam Ranger a couple of weeks ago and delighted in sitting atop a mountain in freezing conditions and remotely configuring and triggering my camera from the car, in relative warmth.. I am starting to love this bit of kit too!

Feedback

Have your camera with you and wait! The best photo's usually just apear before your eyes oh and sleep during the day but be up and out before dawn and then same at the close of the day. Just be out there. Analize your photo's in Lightroom or what ever your chosen program is, study the metadata and work out why this pic was good (not my picture, your picture!). Look at heaps of other people's photo's and try and work out what they did to make the shot.
