This was a nearly impossible shot, and one that took a lot of patience, hard work, and planning to get. The light was very dim, and the dynamic range of this scene was brutal. To capture all the range of colors and tones, I had to shoot 3 separate exposures — one for the highlights, one for the mid-tones, and one for the shadows. I later combined them to form this finished image that best represents the entire scene. Even today's modern cameras cannot reach the levels of light sensitivity that our perfectly designed eyes can see! This is not HDR per se, but rather a hand-blended exposure used to capture the full dynamic range of the natural scene. Some refer to it as the DRI (Dynamic Range Increase) technique. Either way, it is by far my favorite image from the evening!
