Location
Right outside my hotel overlooking Niagara Falls. There is a small overlook that was surpisingly devoid of any people in the morning except myself.Time
Taken at sunrise. Can't remember what exact time but I was there fore the entire golden hour during mid-October.Lighting
This shot is a bit tricky as I did not have any graduated filters on hand, so I settled for HDR. Given the intense clouds that resulted perhaps HDR was the way to go.Equipment
My entry level T3i mounted on a tripod with some neutral density filters to get the falls to blur just a bit. But pointed directly at the sun, I did need a few stops of blockage.Inspiration
It was a family trip to Niagara, my first time on the Canadian side. We "upgraded" our hotel to be near the falls, and were rewarded with a river view. Not that spectacular but from our window I noticed the overlook and decided the next morning I would see if the view was worth capturing.Editing
I used Photomatix to run a normal HDR process on the three images I took. Some color correction was needed, but since I was in RAW, there was no issue. In my camera bag
My bag is quite small but I keep my T3i, kit lens, a telephoto, a 50mm prime and various filters: ND, CPL. Some cable releases round it all out.Feedback
With any landscape it is all about lighting. Sunrise and Sunset. It is easy to capture a good photo when the lighting is nice. Creatively speaking, I never like static waterfalls and therefore always bring a tripod and some ND filters to at least smooth the water going over the falls.
