Location
This was captured in Old Town, Quebec City.Time
We had been fighting crowds most of the day in the touristy areas of Quebec City. Late afternoon on a narrow alley in Old Town I spotted this doting grandfather/granddaughter pair enjoying a day out together. The crowds of the day magically parted for a few seconds letting me capture the pair relatively isolated.Lighting
The diffuse light was a result of the lowness of the sun and the narrowness of the alley. Light reflecting from the tops of the buildings illuminated street scenes.Equipment
Canon 7d, 24-105L lens. This is my normal setup if I am on the street.Inspiration
The impeccably dressed grandfather was 100% engaged with his granddaughter as they enjoyed a day on the town. This image just captured the intimacy of the moment for me.Editing
Converted to B/W. Some dodging and burning to better isolate the subject and, voila! In my camera bag
Besides my camera (Canon 7d) I usually have a 24-105L and a Tokina 11-16 lens. (If I expect to be doing wildlife I pack the 100-400L). I always have a speedlight and wireless trigger, CP filter, ND filters, spare batteries for camera and flash, and an intervalometer. Depending on what I expect to be shooting I have either a walking stick monopod or a carbon fiber travel tripod (Sirui) - or both.Feedback
Be prepared for the spontaneous opportunities that arise. Don't forget to turn around and see what's behind. It is too easy to get focused on something about to happen in the front while something really special is happening behind.
