Location
This image was captured in the dining room of our 170 year old home, which resides in a coastal village in New Brunswick, Canada. All of our windows are eight feet in height, which allows for plenty of ambient light throughout the day- a photographers dream!Time
I awoke on a humid summer morning and was admiring the warmth of the sun as it flowed in through our eastern facing windows. Everything was bathed in rich golden tones and my mind journeyed to Morocco... images of spice and gold filled my imagination and I wanted to try to capture the essence of that experience. I prepared breakfast for my children and their friend (the little girl in the photograph) and stepped upstairs to their closet. I knew exactly which outfit to choose- a gorgeous baby sized sari my sister had brought us from her recent travels to India.Lighting
I love chiaroscuro lighting- the drama and intrigue that it creates. I placed little Kali, who was three years old at the time, close enough to the window to cast a soft light on her, highlighting her perfectly defined little features.Equipment
All of my images are taken on a nine year old Canon rebel xt, with a 28-80mm lens. It is a modest camera, but I am new to photography and oblige to work with the equipment I have at the moment.Inspiration
I love portraiture, and have a strong appreciation for classic art and Netherlandish painters, particularly those from the Dutch Golden Age- Vermeer, in particular. I try to emulate their lighting styles in camera and often employ the use of monochromatic tones. I keep my images simple. I find the fewer distractions there are, the greater the emotional connection the viewer has with the photograph.Editing
This image was taken very early in my photographic journey.. I had only been shooting for a couple of months, but it is always a favourite amongst viewers. I made use of dodge/burn, added a slight texture over our plaster walls, and added a warm vignette to compliment the golden window light. In my camera bag
At this time, my only equipment is a Canon rebel xt and a 28-80mm lens. I would like other aspiring photographers to realize that the greatest ability comes not from the equipment in your camera bag, but from the direction of your perception. Imagination and intent are the greatest tools. Of course, photoshop is wonderful!Feedback
I would suggest first and foremost, that photographers pursue what inspires them. For me, it's art. If I wasn't a busy mother to young children, I would be painting portraits that are styled similarly to my photography. Photography, of course, allows for quicker results, but it is an art form all the same, and it has been a saving grace in providing a creative outlet for me during this busy time of my life. Study what inspires you.. analyze and understand the details, the technicalities. Once the 'mind' is content, the spirit/essence will flow, and you will create works of art that reflect you and resonate with the viewer.
