A portrait of my twelve year old daughter, taken in our home on the east coast of Canada. Robins have special meaning to our family, as they represent a 'visitation' from her grandfather, who passed away before she was born. This image is particularly meaningful for us. May it remind you of loved ones that have moved on, but are always near in spirit.

I love your picture, it has beautiful tones as well as subtle lighting; and I can see it's been lovingly crafted.

The use of the colors and lighting create a good mood. There is a story here. Gotta like it.

This image was created with my twelve year old daughter in our home foyer, with the beautiful light of an east coast Canadian summer peeking through our windows. This image has special meaning to our family, as robins have come to represent the presence of her Grandfather, who unfortunately passed away before her birth.Time
With glimpses of late afternoon summer's light flickering in through our large windows, I thought it would be the perfect ambience to create this meaningful portrait of my daughter.Lighting
I love the dreamlike quality the dappled natural light provided... a natural setting reminiscent of simpler times.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D, with a 24-70mm lensInspiration
I was enchanted by the simple beauty, partnered with the delicate window light in our 180 year old heritage home in Canada's east coast. My daughter, age twelve, did not have the chance to meet her grandfather, as her passed away before her birth. In our family, robins have come to symbolize his presence. A large part of my journey with photography is the idea that 'every photograph tells a story'. This image represents a visitation from her grandfather, a dreamlike connection between worlds. In this way, I feel that I am able to contribute to the legacy of his memory, and create a treasured art piece for my daughter.Editing
For this image, I added on the image of the bird in post processing, to create a composite image. Basic photoshop adjustments using curves, dodge and burn, and slight adjustments to the warmth of the image were the finishing touches. In my camera bag
My Canon 6D is my trusty sidekick, often paired with my Sigma 24-70mm lens, or a 1.8 50mm prime lens, if I'm shooting inside. I adore the bokeh my Canon 70-200mm provides. It is heavy enough that I need to use a monopod, but the quality of the images it creates is top notch. Well worth lugging it around.Feedback
For photographers interested in my style of work, I always suggest they 'find the story first'. When you are motivated by something that has meaning to you, than you have an instinctive advantage in knowing how to find the right angle, lighting, and colour toning. If you are wanting to create a composite image, preferably shoot your 'stock' image yourself, with lighting that matches the environment where it will be added. There are also stock images available for free, or often a small cost (just make sure you are respecting copyright) that can always be adjusted to match the lighting of your image. For those adjustments, Photoshop masking, layers, curve adjustments, and dodge and burn are the must haves in your tool kit. From there, I prefer keeping the environment of the photograph relatively natural, to convey the story in a believable manner. Chances are, what resonates with you in a meaningful way, will connect and intrigue others, as well. It's all about building that bridge between storyteller and audience.
