Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photograph in July of 2014 just north of Moscow, ID. At that time, I was fairly new to photography and was trying to learn as much as I could from other local photographers.
Time
This was taken roughly 40 minutes before sunset.
Lighting
Lighting can be a photographers friend or enemy. Instead of trying to make the light work for you just work with the light you have, you'll be a lot less frustrated.
Equipment
I used a manfrotto tripod with a victor smith ball head. The camera set up was a Canon 5D Mark II with a Tamron 17mm F3.5 Prime.
Inspiration
It was inspired by a local photographers comment that you should never take a photo using the rear end of a subject. Naturally I didn't listen, mainly because I didn't want to narrow my perception of photography, as I was so new to it. That next evening I decided I would take a crack at getting the "forbidden" shot. I set up and liked the composition but I still had this little voice pushing back saying, "he's right you know, this isn't going to work." I captured it anyways. Right away I posted the shot on social media and sadly, I didn't get the big response like I had hoped. It was a bit disappointing at first, but months passed and the more I showed this image to others the better response I got. To date, this is my most successful image and I’m glad I decided to take the risk that day to get it. In the words of the late Mohammad Ali, "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life." It’s become a motto in many ways.
Editing
This photo has a little bit of post processing. I mainly used Photoshop to boost the clarity and enhance the color on the truck but honestly the only reason this shot turned out the way it did was because of the natural light. Never underestimate the power of solar rays.
In my camera bag
As I am not a full time photographer I can't afford the latest and greatest so I shoot with a lot of older equuoments like a Canon 5D Mark II, Tamron 17mm prime 3.5mm, Canon 50mm 1.8F, Canon 70-300mm F5.6, Canon 100mm Macro F2.8 and the classic Canon 28-135mm basic lens.
Feedback
