Behind The Lens

Location

Like most of my photos, this is a composite of a few different photos. I live in a place where the weather doesn't always seem to want to co-operate and so sometimes I have to get creative. Since I wasn't able to be in the forest, I had to shoot myself at home, in my room where I have access to a large window that allows beautiful natural light in.

Time

Whenever I do a composite like this and I'm not able to actually go to the site, then I tend to shoot my photos in my bedroom. I do have a studio, but I found my room is perfect for just getting natural light shots which makes it easier to match color and lighting later on in photoshop. It also allows me to shoot pretty much any time of the day!

Lighting

One of the most complicated things about doing a composite like this, is making sure your lighting matches. This is why it's better to try to get all your photos in the same location, under the same lighting. If you don't have your lighting matching, your photo won't work. It takes a lot of processing and practice to learn how to match and manipulate lighting.

Equipment

This was shot using my Nikon D600 with a 50mm 1.8 lens. I did have to use my tripod with my remote to get the shot of me.

Inspiration

Fall is one of my favorite times of year! I love the foggy mornings, the colors of all the trees, and all the beautiful leaves that fall to the ground. I wanted a way of trying to capture what fall meant to me. Capturing the fall colors and the motion of the leaves falling down.

Editing

I always do post-processing to my photos. It helps me create the dark mood I try to go for when creating my photos. I tend to be a darker editor with heavy mattes which isn't what most people do. Without photoshop I wouldn't be able to achieve the looks I have inside my head!

In my camera bag

My camera bag is always filled with lots of goodies, from my D600 to my D90 (which is currently being used as a lens holder), cleaning supplies for my cameras and lenses since I'm an outdoor shooter, and I tend to get my lenses dirty a lot. I always have my remote with me, but will only carry my tripods if I know I will need them. Otherwise I will just prop my camera up somewhere. I also carry some of my most used lenses. My 50mm 1.8, my 70-200mm, and my 85mm 1.8. Depending on the photo, depends on what I will carry in my bag. I can have anything from wipes (if theres anything that involves dirt or sticky stuff), drinks and snacks, to props. Theres always something different in there.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to try! Don't be afraid to do something completely out of the box! Try shooting a photo in different lighting so you can learn how to match it all, and if you can't....Keep trying! There is no right or wrong way to do this. Its your way and my way. This process can be very time consuming, but it can also be extremely rewarding. Always pay attention to the small details. And just have fun!
