Behind The Lens

Location

Since I live in Canada and don't always have access to the outdoors, sometimes I have to get creative. I had this image in my head for awhile, but when I finally got to it, it was in the middle of winter. Most water is frozen in Canada in the winter time so there was no way I was going IN any water. So I ended up taking this photo in my room (which is where I do most of my indoor shoots for manipulations) laying down on a stool. I then edited out the stool and added in the water giving the illusion I was drowning in water.

Time

When I do a photo shoot for a manipulation and i'm using my room. I usually have to take my photos either on a cloudy day, or early in the morning. I face a large window in my room that allows great lighting in. Too early in the morning and I have too much light, and late in the day I have dull and flat light (which sometimes works depending on what I'm trying to achieve).

Lighting

I always use whats available to me which is just natural light. I do love the fact that my bedroom has a nice large window that allows such great light to come in. It is my go to 'indoor' place I use for most of my manipulations. The light I get from the window gives me the most natural light without being too harsh and without any harsh shadows, so if I need to manipulate light later on in an image, it makes it a lot easier.

Equipment

I shot this using my Nikon D600 and my 50mm lens. My bedroom isn't overly big so I need a small enough lens that can fit my whole body in the shot. I do use a tripod and remote for any self portraits. I never use any flashes, reflectors, just all natural light.

Inspiration

This photo was inspired by how I was feeling about photography at the time. I suffer with really bad anxiety and going online with my photography has really challenged me in a lot of ways. I love to create art, it helps a lot with my anxiety. But it never prepared me for really being 'out there' and hearing what people had to say about my art. I felt really vulnerable and started becoming afraid of what I might log on to one day. So, I started to avoid places that really made my anxiety fly high (Social Media). Then after I started avoiding places my anxiety became that much worse. I felt like everything I was working really hard at, was starting to slip through my hands. I kinda felt like I was drowning. I felt pressured to always be online, connecting with as many people as possible, I felt I had to create good art all the time, I felt I had soo much to do around me and that is what inspired me to do this photo.

Editing

The original image of this photo was just me laying on a stool in front of my bedroom door. When I brought it into photoshop I cut myself out of the original image and layered myself on a background of water. Then I added in all the bubbles, added a bit more to my dress and played around with the color until I was happy with it. I also played around with the light a little, added a texture and that was it.

In my camera bag

I normally only bring what I need on a photo shoot. I usually end up just bringing my camera, the lens thats attached (which is either my 50mm or 85mm) and my remote. My camera bag is like a backpack so when I need my tripod I usually end up sticking that through the bottom straps of the bag across my back. Then sometimes I have an extra bag or two filled with dresses and props. I definitely turn a few heads when I'm out walking to a shoot :)

Feedback

Don't be afraid to try something different. Don't let people tell you how they think your photography should look. It's your vision, your work, be brave, be proud. Never apologize for your vision and never be afraid to show people what your vision is! Always take a chance and plan plan plan.
