Location
This photograph was taken at a private plantation called Tomotley Plantation in Yemassee, South Carolina, about an hour north of Hilton Head.Time
We arrived at the plantation about 30 minutes before sunrise. This particular shot was taken about 10 minutes before the beams of light began to stream in from over the horizon.Lighting
The lighting in this photograph is somewhat dark and at the same time soft. The light lines of fog cover the freshly planted grass in a way that give this photograph a surreal look. The pre-sunrise light is always so intriguing to me.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 30D, my old camera (only 8 megapixels) using a Tamron 70-300mm zoom lens to get a more intimate feel among the enormous oak trees. I used a Canon remote shutter release as the camera body was stationed on my carbon fiber tripod.Inspiration
My father-in-law and I found this plantation a year before as we scouted areas to take pictures in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. We shot Old Sheldon Church one morning and decided to drive around the backroads to explore after the sun had come up. In 2013, we drove past this majestic plantation and nearly ran off the road as he slammed on the brakes when I gasped, imploring him to stop and take a look! We shot the scene in 2013 and wanted to come back in 2014 to get different angles and different light. I love everything about the Angel Oaks in South Carolina. They have always intrigued me since I was a child visiting the state on vacations. I was inspired to build upon my vision that I initially saw here in 2013.Editing
I did not do much heavy editing on this photo. It was a simple black and white conversion in Lightroom, using their Creamtone preset. I liked the way the tones built contrast in the branches vs. the moss and leaves. I made minor contrast tweaks, sharpened and exported! In my camera bag
I am a young, ambitious photographer and I always seem to have more in my bag than anyone else. I am always worried I won't have the gear I need. I have a Lowepro 300 backback that is full to the gills. I now shoot with a Canon 7D and typically have my 17-55 mm 2.8 lens on the body. I also have a 70-300mm zoom in the bag, a 50mm 1.4, a 10-22mm wide angle lens and many different neutral density filters, extra batteries, remote shutter release, cleaning supplies and more. Can't forget the Manfrotto tripod that is strapped to the outside of the pack as well.Feedback
My biggest piece of advice when visiting the deep south is to explore! You can easily go to landmarks that other photographers have captured but it was so rewarding to stumble upon this beautiful site that was tucked away on private land. Another piece of advice, building on that, is to always ask permission to shoot on private property! We were granted permission to shoot here so we felt comfortable with capturing this amazing location. The back roads and off the path locations seem to offer to much. Let your eyes guide you, not Google maps!
