Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home. At the time I was only a person who loved photos, but didn't knew to many things about this art.

Time

The photo was taken at night, during a power shortage. The night is the best time of the day when you should take photos of lit candles, because you should only use the light from the flame and no other light source

Lighting

The lighting was the candle itself. I didn't use flash or anything else so I could get this darkness in the background. I consider that when taking photos of an object that emits light, you shouldn't use flash or another light source.

Equipment

The camera that I used was a point and shot camera. It was a Canon IXUS 80 IS. This camera was the camera that helped me learn the basics of photography. To capture this photo I used the Macro settings on the camera. I didn't use a tripod because I have steady hands, but when taking macro photos if you can, you should use a tripod or anything that can help you keep the camera stabilized.

Inspiration

The glow of the candle in the night was the main thing that inspired me to take this photo and secondly the fact that I like to shoot macro photos.

Editing

When I shot this photo I didn't knew many things about post-processing, so the photo remained as shot. If I would do some post-processing to this photo I would enhance the sharpness and contrast and then I would lower the highlights just a bit.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my bridge camera, a Fujifilm Finepix HS30EXR and my phone camera. I consider that at the moment my Fuji can meet my needs, but in the future I am going to switch to a DSLR camera.

Feedback

If you want to capture an artistic photo of a candle you need to let your imagination go wild so that you can transform the candle and its flame into something interesting. Then you will need patience and take a lot of photos, until you get the desired flame form. If you don't have a steady hand you should use a tripod or something similar. Also you should use a Macro lens or the Macro settings on your camera. Finally try to take the photo in a place that doesn't have another source of light so that the background will remain black.
