i bought a tea light candle holder awhile back with this very shot in mind for it. it took a bit of finagling of the light to get it to halo out from the holder properly–for you see–that is actually my strobe you are seeing emanating from the candle holder. sometimes it is best to hide your strobe in plain sight, much the same way i did in my romance scavenger hunt shot and my inspiration shot. don't be afraid to experiment with your lighting, the results will sometimes really surprise you

Location
in my garage studio at my homeTime
it was pretty late at night as that is when i do most of my workLighting
this is a single light setup. there is a speedlight with a dome diffuser directly behind the lantern i am holding. it is aimed directly at the camera which gives it the nice glow and replicates candle light, while the light bouncing out the side is lighting my faceEquipment
i shoot with a canon 7D and i had the 85mm f/1.4 lens on it. the speedlite is a canon 580EXII fired via pocket wizardsInspiration
this was a series of black and white shots that came about through a photography challenge on G+ to create five new shots over five daysEditing
the color conversion was done in NIK silverFX pro and then some other slight modifications done in lightroomIn my camera bag
my basic setup that i take everywhere is: canon 7D 85mm f 1.4 10-22mm f 3.5-4 70-200mm f 2.8 580EXII speedlite set of pocket wizardsFeedback
think of light as a having a personality and know how to use that personality to your advantage. different light will give a different feel to each shot so use it to your advantage to set the mood of the shot
