Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a Ballet in Paris. My cousin was one of the performers, so I just thought i'd snap a few shots. I had just gotten my first Dslr, so it was a great time of discovery, experimentation, and trying to figure out what my camera could do.

Time

It was taken late in the evening about 5 or 6 years ago. My cousin invited me to one of her performances and asked me to photograph bits and pieces of the show for memories sake.

Lighting

The lightning was directly above the performers and since they were wearing white clothes, they really popped out from the dark background.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 and an 18-200mm lens. I handheld the camera, which was quite challenging at such a slow shutter speed.

Inspiration

I really liked the way the dancers where moving. I thought it was very elegant and thought to myself, if I started the exposure when the dancers where on the floor, and then kept the shutter open when they got back up, I could get an interesting fountain/ ghost effect.

Editing

This photo did not need much post-processing, I cleaned up the background to make it nice and black, rather than dark grey. And lowered the brightness of the dancers as they were slightly blown out compared to the background.

In my camera bag

Today I use my trusty Nikon D750. Its small, tough, and a great performer! I take my 24-70mm 2.8 everywhere with me, its very versatile and works in most situations. For portraits I use a beautiful 80's manual Nikkor 50mm 1.4. When I can afford it, I want to invest in an 85mm 1.4 and 70-200mm 2.8.

Feedback

When shooting long exposures of moving subjects, you never truly know how its going to turn out and it will get frustrating, but never stop until you get the shot.
