The picture was taken in Espoo, Finland. This place is on the Southern coast of Espoo near the Espoo / Helsinki border.Time
This was the first day during that winter I had a change to shoot on ice. The sea had frozen later than usual and it was already late January. The photo is captured about 4 PM.Lighting
The low hanging Sun created long shadows and brought up interesting details from the snow building a very nice atmosphere.Equipment
I used Lumia 1020 smartphone to capture this one. It was captured in RAW using manual exposure settings.Inspiration
It was all very ad hoc. I went to take pictures on the ice utilizing the light of the setting Sun without any particular objectives. I didn't even had my DSLR with me. All that changed when I saw those ice fishers. I quickly created some plans on what kind of images I would like to take and at the same time I speed up to reach them before the sun disappears. Too late. The fishers stopped they activities and started to walk towards the shore just outside of the frame. I could capture only a few shots before they where in the shadows.Editing
The image was edited in Lightroom. Just basic editing was needed. A little bit WB adjustment, contrast, saturation and sharpening. And cropping. An easy job this time.In my camera bag
Almost daily I carry a bag packed with a Canon EOS 5D mk II and 2 to 3 lenses. Typically 15mm fisheye, 50mm and 135mm primes. When I'm traveling the lens will be 24-105mm zoom. Depending on the needs I may pack other lenses and flashes too. My cameraphone is Lumia 950 XL.Feedback
Ice, snow and rising/setting sun create an exiting photo opportunity where shadows and textures changes the landscape. Shooting is otherwise pretty strait forward you just need to careful with the exposure. Too little exposure turns the white show gray and too much makes you loose all the details. If you are used to use filters ND and polarizing filters will improve your photos. When you are walking on the ice be careful. Photographers don't float very well.
