Behind The Lens

Location

The image was captured at a lake near by my home.

Time

Late evening. My original plan was to capture sunset.

Lighting

The sun was already behind the trees on the back. So the whole scene was in shadow. The white boat really stood out against the dark water.

Equipment

I used Canon 5D mk II and Canon 100-400mm lens. Camera was hand held.

Inspiration

The boat was the first thing I noticed when I arrived to the beach. A white abandoned boat on dark waters. I just got to get that picture. The second thing I noticed was an another boat approaching it. The people who left the boat loose were about to catch it and take it back to shore. I wanted the picture so I quickly changed a wideangle to the telezoom and toked 6-7 shots before the other boat got too close.

Editing

The image is of coarse converted to b&w. A fair amount of tone mapping has been done to make the boat stand out. The image is also slightly cropped. All editing was done with Lightroom.

In my camera bag

My Canon 5D mk II body and 3 to 4 lenses depending on what I'm about to shoot, a speed light and Lumia 1020. A typical set could be 24-105mm zoom, 50mm f/1.2 and 135mm f/2 primes. The 135mm is my new favorite and carry it with me even it I wouldn't need it. If I'm on a longer assignment I take my Surface Pro 3 with Lightroom with me for on site review and editing.

Feedback

Perhaps the only advice I can give is keep your eyes and mind open. Capture the moment!
