Location
This photo was taken at "Het Vinne", in Zoutleeuw, Belgium. It is the largest natural lake in Flanders. Birds and insects have their habitat at the lake, that can be visited throughout the year from dusk till dawn. It is about 20 minutes driving from my home so I am regularly visiting this place to come to rest after a hectic day at work.Time
The picture was taken on the 12th of January 2013 around 4 o'clock pm. It was a cold winter day and the sun was setting rapidly. Only a few moments later it would have been too dark for my 400mm to take a decent photo.Lighting
I was almost heading back home as the last light of the day was falling over the lake. At first sight the photo seemed too dark to be interesting, but using LightRoom I managed to improve the quality.Equipment
This shot was taken on a Canon Eos 450d, my first dslr. The lens was a Canon EF 400mm f5.6L USM, which I bought secondhand. Probably one of the best buys I ever did. The lens is light to travel with, fast and very sharp. A beanbag was used for stability.Inspiration
I was not my intention to take a shot from some birds in flight that afternoon. After my walk around the lake, taking pictures of flowers and insects, I sat down in the bird hide to take a rest before heading home when this opportunity came along.Editing
I took the exposure up by 0,75 in LightRoom, increased the whites a bit and lowered the blacks. The details in the wings became more visible doing so. By increasing the temperature of the white balance I got that golden glow. A little bit of sharpening and noise reduction was used. The picture is slightly cropped to get some distracting details out of the viewers way. I also used some vignetting to attract the attention to the center. In my camera bag
After my 450d I bought a secondhand Canon eos 7D which took my pictures to another level. My 400mm is my vast companion and a EF 70-200 1:4L IS USM is also in my bag. Only very recently I am using a 7D mark II. When visiting some bird hide a beanbag is also part of the equipment.Feedback
Always try to take advantage of the available light as long as possible, be patient, you never know what might happen if you stay around long enough. I almost went home because it was cold and getting dark and suddenly these geese flew over looking for a place to stay for the night.
