Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my very own dining room! I have limited space so the large glass door in my dining room provides lots of natural light.

Time

It was taken at around midday. My son was sleep, the house was quiet so I thought, why not float some fruit!

Lighting

Lighting was all natural light with a white foam board to bounce some light back. Nothing fancy!

Equipment

I used my Canon 700D, a tripod, remote, foam board as a reflector, Nifty 50mm lens and natural light! The fruit was balancing on skewers and tooth picks!

Inspiration

I have always been curious as to how levitation is achieved in photography. As I have young children, its a bit hard to get them to pose for me the way I want, so I thought id use something a little more controlled. The first thing I thought of was fruit!

Editing

To get this picture I had to take two individual photos and blend them together. First I got a picture of the background without anything in with it. I then set up the fruit and got the photo of them all balancing on skewers and tooth picks! The trick is to make sure you manually focus the camera to make sure it stays in the exact same frame! I then added them into photoshop and simply brushed away the parts I didn't want there by painting in the blank background.

In my camera bag

I usually travel light as I have kids, so they take up most of the room! I have my canon 700D twin lens kit, plus the nifty 50mm. I also carry my manfrotto tripod and a shutter release as well, you never know when you might need them!

Feedback

The best advice I can offer is practice practice PRACTICE! It is a lot of fun creating photos like this one and there are so many tutorials available on the internet that there is no reason you cant achieve the same result yourself. If a hobbyist photographer with limited editing skills like me can make fruit float like magic, anyone can!!
