Location
The photo was taken at my home apartments. I am a self taught photographer and keep looking at same subjects from different views. I walk down this hallway daily and it never occurred to me to capture this differently until one night.Time
The shot was captured at night after 9pm.Lighting
I wanted to present a dark, gloomy and mysterious look. The lights above were flickering, that presented a better view both above and on floor. There was too much light on sides, so I tried to either cut them off or erect barrier to prevent their glares.Equipment
I used Canon 600D with Canon 18-135mm kit lens on tripod with remote shutter.Inspiration
It was vacation time and I was alone staying at my floor. Usually, one can witness activity and noise from hallway and around it until midnight. The night I captured the hallway the lights above kept flickering. Also, staying alone gave me a perfect chance to capture the hallway with no disturbance. I was alone and desired to capture something similar that when viewed presented a dark mysterious gloomy look. Looking at the hallway, I could envision how I could achieve that and worked on it.Editing
Before capturing the photo, I had visualized how I wanted the final photo to be. This was the first pic where I spent countless hours re-visiting and re-checking the photo for proper processing. For Black & White processing, I use Silver Efex Pro 2. I wanted the pic to offer a dark gloomy look. I selectively darkened foreground by amplifying Blacks and also, increased white for nearest bright spot on floor. This way I ensured that tones balanced each other in foreground. The whites and brightness was increased slightly for bright areas to give a mix of bright and dark shadows. Finally, I removed certain obstructive elements from the walls and doorsIn my camera bag
I love shooting landscapes and mostly shoot low-light. I own a Canon 600D and my go to lens is Canon 18-135mm lens, both I purchased 3 years ago. I use this lens for most of my photography. 18mm is not enough for landscapes, however until now it has sufficed. The next lens is nifty-fifty. No matter where I go, regardless of type of photography, I carry this. Its lightweight and amazing for low-light photography. Thirdly, spare batteries and memory cards are recommended at all times. This way I can relax in case something goes awry. For landscapes, I often use filters (ND and CPL), so they are my next important items. Lastly, I own a Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, but I carry it only when necessary. Mostly not.Feedback
For Black & White Photography, remember to shoot in color. When converting to B/W, think back what elements you want to highlight. Try to envision the image without color before capturing them. Conveying in B/W is more difficult than color, so relax and think what is to be conveyed. Be patient and repeatedly capture the same object from same and different angles. Jot down ideas to keep track of them. Never rush through post-processing. Always work of same photo again sometime later, you never know what different idea might strike your head.
