There's a wonderful old town near the palace where the Prince(?) lives. Turn around and walk away from the changing of the guard and you'll walk down this street. Fantastic colors and a feel that you don't get walking in the US. Narrow, brick pavement, cool air, four story humanity with the sky peeking through. Very enjoyable for a few day anyway. Was quite happy to get home.

If memory serves we were wandering around one of the few flat space in Monaco. If you haven't been there, most of Monaco is built on the side of a cliff more or less. There's a little tiny flat space on the ocean front and that's where the 'downtown' is crammed in. There's a bunch of old narrow streets crossing and parallel with Rue Basse and Rue Comte Félix Gastaldi. One of those streets offered the sudden burst of sunshine and us walking in the right direction. The shot spoke to me and I took it right there in the street in front of everybody. Very candid. No posing or prepping.Time
This was late morning close to noonish if memory serves. The cliffs around Monaco really do a number on late afternoon light.Lighting
nope. All natural lighting in a candid setting.Equipment
I am embarrassed to write this, but this was a trip that was a business related thing for my wife, so photography was kind of an afterthought. Plus, I didn't know conditions or security if I had to leave my camera stuff somewhere. Plus, I was supposed to be spending time with my wife and her co-workers, not running off to relish the scenery (which was stunning btw). I had an old POS Fuji camera. I want to say an S7000 (don't quote me on that). Really nothing fancy at all.Inspiration
I loved the colors of the buildings. Everything in 'old' Monaco seemed to be painted something bright. It was like they kept the town maintained like this because they knew that hordes of tourists would be looking for 'postcardesque' settings for pictures.Editing
I might have brightened the image in Photoshop, although at the time I posted this, I was just getting into PSD and its mind altering capabilities. So relative to what I know now, this shot is relatively untouched. I barely '...knew what I didn't know...' as the saying goes.In my camera bag
Then (~2007ish??) I had only my old camera. Now I shoot with a Nikon D90, which of course is old now as well. A tripod comes along on most of my trips, except for hikes.Feedback
The further I get into photography, the more joy I get out of using my eye and my sense of composition in the field to get the shots I want. While a newer camera, bigger lenses, and more burst capabilities would be nice, at the end of the day I like knowing I have a good shot because my eye spotted it and my brain composed it, NOT because my camera does everything or I can fix it in post. Use your brain and your eyes, they are the best camera you'll EVER HAVE. my.02. Jeff
