Behind The Lens
Location
The photograph was shot in a warehouse location.Time
Several shots were staged over two days in two locations, with breaks to move the cars for different set up and anglesLighting
The photograph is part of a collection of vintage Mercedes 300SL gullwings and roadsters. I planned the lighting over several weeks, using model cars to design the lighting. For this shot, I built an overhead scrim and used tungsten studio lights from above. Two speedlights were placed on the near side, front and rear, and a studio strobe was placed inside the vehicle.Equipment
The camera was a Canon 7D with 17-40mm lens.Inspiration
I was inspired by the design and beauty of the original 300SL. The iconic gullwing doors, racing history and engineering innovations make it one of the most collectible sports cars. The lighting is how I envisioned its classic lines could be felt with drama and connect with the passion of vintage car collectors.Editing
Post processing was accomplished in Photoshop, mostly to control color balance and reflections. Imperfections in the concrete foreground were also removed. In my camera bag
I currently use a 5DIV, but will carry a 5DIII for travel. My lenses change frequently, but I plan ahead to minimize the load. Better and fewer glass is ideal for me when transported. I rarely take more than two lenses even when on assignment. Lighting and modifiers are a whole different matter requiring their own cases.Feedback
Study the environment. Study the subject. Create a plan and then act spontaneously.
