The dark hole behind the gate, at the bottom of those stairs is an off-shoot cave from the lava tube where we were able to walk upright and in artificial light. The gate sign warns that there is no light, the footing is VERY uneven, and headroom is tight. We didn't have flashlights and I'm claustrophobic anyway..... needless to say we didn't go in very far.
What interested me was the sunlight, streaming down the stairs, onto the moss-covered wall.... as if it was a spotlight on the entrance to a not-so-inviting place to be.
