Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a friends cabin in Shelton, Washington which is right on the Puget Sound. The fireworks in the picture were shot right off the beach.

Time

We wanted the night to be plenty dark so our fireworks would be more spectacular. This picture was taken taken continuously between 10:30 and 11:00.

Lighting

Fireworks provide a great deal of light but they are different so I had to play with exposure a lot before I got it the way I wanted. I love the way that the light from some of the lower fireworks are reflected in the water, that made me happy when I saw it.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5000 with an 18-55mm lens, a tripod to keep everything steady, and my camera's built in interval timer.

Inspiration

I really enjoy night and long exposure photography, the time they take, and the cool effects you can get by letting low light do the work for you. I had been wanting to try and capture many fireworks in one picture and what better time than the 4th of July!

Editing

There was very little post processing put in to this picture. I of took about 40 pictures that are combined into the finished product. I liked the way it looked without post processing so I left it alone.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D5000 with my 18-55mm lens attached. I also carry a 55-200mm lens and an external remote as well as various memory cards, lens cleaners, a headlamp (essential for night photography), and usually a granola bar of some sort.

Feedback

Plan ahead and dress for the weather. Lucky for me the night I took this picture was not rainy as it many times is in the northwest, but it is important to be aware of these things, especially if it is cold. Being frozen can ruin a good time very fast. Also, When taking pictures of fireworks try to get something other than just firework in your picture. A picture without any reference points won't have the same effect on the viewer in regards to size and location.
