Congratulations. Your wonderful image is the winner of my challenge. The stunning colors and the way your image captured the majestic pose made this an All Star pelican entry.

Location
I took this photo on the California coast at Avila Beach near San Luis Obispo.Time
It was around 2 p.m.Lighting
Sunny California day in December.Equipment
I used a Sony Nex-6 with a 50-210mm lens, handheld.Inspiration
There is a pier at Avila Beach that is quite popular with tourists as well as locals. There is a crab shack and other fish-cleaning spots. The pelicans love the area. They swarm the area and are not afraid of the people at all. They sit on top of the shack, and they walk along the railing of the pier. I was transfixed trying to get as many good shots as I could. My distance from the pelican was about 10-15 feet.Editing
I did some fine-tuning of the contrast and cropped a bit. I also used an in-camera HDR feature. In my camera bag
I carry a Sony a6000 and a Sony Nex-6. I also carry 50-210mm, 14mm, 17-55mm and fish-eye lenses.Feedback
Getting very close to the tame sea birds is probably the key here. I stayed in one spot and just let them land all around me.
