Behind The Lens

Location

This is one shot from an assignment for a couple of friends who own an Artisan Bakery in Monterrey, México.

Time

This was a one day photo shoot. I've done previous work for them, so they like my work and my ideas. There was nothing planned, as for the kind of shot or specific layout, format of the image and stuff like that. The main thing is that muffins were being introduced to the bakery, it was the new product and they needed images for promos/content to show in social media. They just wanted great shots, so I got the privilege of doing whatever I feel would do the job. Needless to say they were really pleased.

Lighting

For the light I used strobes and I wanted to keep it simply yet very effective. So I used indirect light bounced off from a white foam board on the side and an accent back light from behind slightly to my left and a small white fill card on the left side.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony a850 full frame camera, tripod mounted, Speedotron 2400 Watt/Second flash kit.

Inspiration

The inspiration in this case, is not something that grows spontaneously like a wild flower. The customer hires you because it needs a great shot on demand, so, in my case, the process I go through is: As I start to work with the subject, I first try to set up a nice composition, then work on the lighting and keep on making adjustments until I like it. some times you have to work with what is there, on other occasions, you are allowed to introduce props.

Editing

I work the image on Adobe CS Photoshop using the NIK Collection plug in and I just adjust levels, contrast and noise reduction. That's it.

In my camera bag

I have a bunch of equipment. So I carry what I feel might be needed for the kind of assignment I'll be doing. Sometimes I get to shoot images for the tourism industry, sometimes it is jewelry, another time is food, even industrial and manufacturing plants. So it varies quite a lot.

Feedback

For this kind of images, the key: is the lighting. This very same image, poorly lit would not entice the appetite of the observer. Same composition, same framing, same everything, but with the wrong light, it will just not make the cut.
