Behind The Lens

Location

I was traveling on assignment and this day I had to cover "La Casa de la Cultura" (House of Culture) in Tijuana, Baja California, México.

Time

I got there about 10:00am and probably the shot was taken about 11:30am.

Lighting

Well, actually I didn't have to work on setting up artificial lighting , but I must say that using natural available light effectively, requires some experience and a trained eye. As I arrived to this location, I immediately fell in love with the floor to ceiling windows. For this shot which was not planned, I didn't want to use on camera flash, so, I quickly set up my handy travel tripod and chose the back light to shoot a silhouette of the action.

Equipment

This was made with a Sony Alpha A850 full frame camera, for the lens I think I used a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 zoom lens, a SIRUI carbon fiber travel tripod with ball head.

Inspiration

I was downstairs in the building and started to hear some really nice jazz, quickly climbed to the second floor and walked through the hall until the volume suggested the music was happening behind the door in front of me, I dared to let myself in, not knowing it was a teacher improvising with a saxophone student, I just went ahead and started shooting. As they were done, I introduced myself and explained why I took the liberty of taking pictures without asking for permission, which they conceded after my explanation. Of course, I totally would have missed this moment if I had waited to shoot after their authorization. I showed them the images in the camera's display and they were glad I did it that way.

Editing

Post was kept to a minimum. Of course I decided to go B&W for this one and optimized exposure, levels and contrast.

In my camera bag

My Sony A850, a Sony SAL50F14 50mm f/1.4 lens, a Sony SAL50M28 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens, a Tamron A09 SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Zoom. A Sirui travel tripod. This is the usual gear, but depending on the assignment I might change the lenses and add a super-wide angle, or a 70-200 f/2.8 tele.

Feedback

For fleeting moments like this one, you have to be ready to work with what you have at hand. Also, once you start to shoot, try to anticipate some of the things to come so that you can capture them. Do not get distracted by camera settings or stuff like that or you may end up loosing the best part. What I did in this case, was to take a reading of the light, take one shot to preview the outcome and once set, I was just shooting without moving or changing angle or position within the room in order to keep my exposure constant. I made about 12 to 15 shots but the last one is the winner as the guy was more inspired and leaned back for the last note. Happy shooting!
