We should find another location for this kind of shot. I love the bouncing sparks!

Behind The Lens

Location

I actual took this photo in the evening on busy road that has a blind corner into the tunnel since it was dusk we could see the headlights of the cars coming and get out of the way.

Time

It was a hot august night around 8:00pm

Lighting

This was a long exposure of around 20 seconds it took numerous attempts to get the Steel wool lit long enough to get a good spin.

Equipment

Canon 7D 10-22mm lens steel wool whisk and some string to attach to the whisk. Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I have seen this technique done in many photos but I wanted to do it in a place where it would contain the sparks and as a bonus iI wouldn't burn anything down since it is very dry where I live.

Editing

There was minimal processing on this image. I boosted the saturation a bit then I removed the person spinning the wool.

In my camera bag

I just upgraded to a full frame with a new Canon 6D. My lenses are 70-200mm L Series,85 Sigma 1.4,16-35mm L Series.

Feedback

When shooting with steel wool safety for you and others should be the priority. We had several buckets of water just in case we caught something on fire. The faster you spin the steel wool the better the sparks fly. A tripod is absolutely required do to the long exposure.
