This is my first Barberpole Grasshopper sighting ever and that is after hiking 19 years in New Mexico. Surely one would not expect a colorful specimen as this on the 8th of December after all the freezing nights we have had in this high desert country. This colorful insect was very active and I had as many shots of open ground as I did of him. This photo was one of the last in which he-she slowed down and allowed me to take a macro.
Dactylotum bicolor, also known as the Rainbow Grasshopper, Painted Grasshopper, or the Barber Pole Grasshopper, is a species of grasshopper, and the only presently-recognized member of its genus. It is found in shortgrass prairie and desert grasslands throughout the Western Great Plains of the United States (and southern Canada), southward to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and into northern Mexico. It is known as the "beautiful grasshopper", due to its remarkable clothes.

Thank You! I would not be honest if I did not admit this was a most exciting capture for me and I confess I didn't even know that these Barber-pole Grasshoppers existed. Thank you so much for the "Top Choice" peer recognition.
