Location
I took this photo from my hotel room in Lisbon, Portugal. Our balcony overlooked one of the main shopping and eatery streets in the city so there was always something going on below.Time
This photo was taken in the late afternoon.Lighting
The sun was being muted by the cloud cover rolling in, giving the original image a dull finish to it. Adding the post-processing afterwards gave the image life again.Equipment
I used a GoPro Hero 2 on a Digipower Monopod for this shot. By extending the monopod to its maximum length and leaning over the railing, I was able to get farther into the centre on the street and get the great fisheye view.Inspiration
I had taken multiple images of the street below with my DSLR but they seemed to be lacking something… Given the GoPro's excellent angle of view, I decided to try it for my shot instead. To accentuate the mild fisheye effect, I needed to get as far into the street as possible so as to capture the whole scene and the 'bending' of the buildings. Lisbon is such a dynamic and vibrant place that I wanted to show the activity on the street, as well as the European architectural canyons. The beautiful clouds were just a bonus!Editing
My original image was dull and although it looked nice, it didn't seem to capture anyone's attention. After bumping up the contrast, toning down the saturation, bringing out the shadows, and adding a little crispness, the image really came to life!In my camera bag
In my gear bag, I have a Nikon D7000, Nikon SB-700, Nikkor 18-105mm, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, Nikkor 70-300mm, Solmeta GPS, Manfroto tripod, large Gorillapod, and various filters and accessories. In a separate mini bag I have my GoPro with multiple attachments and monopod.Feedback
Not getting the image you want? Try switching lenses or cameras all together and see how your image changes! This will allow you to challenge yourself, get to know your gear better, and foster your creativity. I love getting architectural shots with my GoPro because it gives it a much different, and slightly unrealistic, perspective. Adding an HDR-esque effect to your image in post-prossesing also helps really bring drama to the photo as well.
