Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my hometown - Marshalltown Iowa in the downtown area.

Time

6:25 PM

Lighting

The facade of the building faces north and I wanted to take this late enough in the evening to get the long shadows. Later on in the year and the sun would have been too far north to get the shadows right.

Equipment

Taken with my Canon T3i, 18-55mm kit lens at a focal length of 42mm on a tripod. Settings were f16, 1/15 second, ISO 100, auto white balance.

Inspiration

In truth I had first envisioned this as a site to do street photography. My plan was to set up and wait for people to walk by so I could capture them candidly as they passed by. During the time I was waiting I kept being thwarted by large trucks parking in my shot or a shortage of pedestrians when the trucks weren't there. As I viewed the scene, I saw the shadows lengthening and was more and more taken with the scene so began photographing at differing focal lengths and cropping in camera at different angles. Out of all the images I took, this one struck me the most.

Editing

There was very little post processing done. I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional for the majority of my PP work. In DPP I adjusted contrast, brightness and tone curves, also a very slight increase in saturation. Finally a minor increase in the sharpening.

In my camera bag

My Canon T3i, 18-55mm, 75-300mm,50mm 1.8, remote release, various filters, and I always take my Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

Sometimes the best laid plans go wrong. This is what happened with this shot. I started out to get one thing but ended up with something else. Look around and imagine, think outside the box, look at things from different angles. What may seem ordinary from a different angle can become extraordinary.
