Behind The Lens

Location

I’m in Iowa for 7-8 months of the year and in Texas for the rest. The majority of my landscape photos are taken in Iowa within a hundred miles of my home in the center of the state. This particular photo was taken on a gravel road about 4 miles from home.

Time

As you can see by the golden glow through the fog, it was just past sunrise.

Lighting

When I awoke early that morning and looked outside, I saw that it was foggy and knew right away that it was going to be a great day to get out early and shoot. The fog diffused the golden hour light making for amazing light conditions.

Equipment

This was taken handheld with my Canon T3i and the original 18-55mm kit lens, which I’ve since sold and upgraded to a Canon 80D.

Inspiration

As I previously wrote, I could see that the fog diffused light that early morning was going to be great, I headed out the door to take advantage of it. As I was composing a shot, I could see a car off in the distance approaching at a high rate of speed kicking up dust from the gravel road, so I waited for just the right moment. The car, with headlights on and dust flying really helped tell a story about the conditions that morning and in my opinion helped make the shot.

Editing

I’ve only shot in raw since the beginning of my digital photography hobby so all of my photos are post processed in Lightroom. Typically I only use the basic panel to adjust contrast, exposure, clarity, black point and white point. Depending on the photo, I may use photoshop elements to remove unwanted distractions but that’s rare. At times I will play around with Nik silver effects to convert to black and white.

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon 80D, 24-105mm, Canon 50mm f1.8, Tamron 150-600mm, Canon 100mm macro, and Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lenses along with assorted filters, step down rings, blower, etc.

Feedback

Take advantage when the lighting is right, get out there and look for great compositions.
