Behind The Lens

Location

This is an Eursian Owl one of twelve Easter eggs smuggled into the country one of three that survived after being confiscated . This owl can take down a deer. This owl lives at the San Fransisco Zoo.

Time

This photograph was taken about 2:30 in the afternoon.

Lighting

It was a sunny day.

Equipment

My camera is a Nikon D5300 my lense is 18mm to 300mm, I did not use a flash or tripod. I cropped this photo.

Inspiration

I love birds and she was out for display, sunshine and time on the grass with a couple other birds of prey. Her size is impressive and her feathers are beautiful. She is not very visible in her enclosure so I was very excited to have the unique opportunity to take her picture.

Editing

I cropped the image and clone stamped some tree bark in a small area to remove a background distraction I boosted the color.

In my camera bag

Just my camera around my neck with the 18-300mm lense and an extra battery along with a lense cleaning cloth.

Feedback

I find myself taking a number of shots, at different angles and a variety of focal lengths. I was very excited about being realitively close to such a beautiful bird and worked to make sure I had a number of shots to ensure choices to pick my favorite. Sometimes it is luck at the zoo to get a great shot of an animal, working around a cage, glass or small crowds of people, some other photographers standing where you want to be maybe go to the zoo often, check when there are animals on display. Good luck
